When you think about working in the food service industry, you may get images of cafeteria workers and fast food employees wearing paper hats. However, nothing could be further from reality when you enter the exciting and glamorous world of gourmet cuisine cooking. A cooking chef that works at a fancy restaurant can make excellent pay and benefits, not to mention have the luxury of working in a pleasant environment. This does require the proper schooling, no matter how good of a cook you happen to be no five star establishment will consider you without the right education.

This education can be found at culinary schools around the world. There are schools in the United States, Europe, Asia and many other locations. Le Cordon Bleu is one of the oldest and most renowned school, associated with the legendary chef Julia Child. While they do have roots in fine French cuisine these days they incorporate their traditional knowledge in with modern cuisine as well. They offer all kinds of specialized courses, including that of pastry chef. So if you have a knack for desserts this is an area to consider.

Another surprising place to get your chef education is at the Art Institute. There are over 30 locations in the United States which are called The Art Institute Culinary Schools. Many people think this institute is for fashion designers and painters, but cooking is also an art form. Just take a look at some of the beautifully presented dishes and cakes at fine restaurants and you will see the art. Of course it is edible art, presentation is important but taste and quality is even more so. These are just two examples of fine culinary schools, in your research you may come across even more to consider.

To become a cooking chef with a good job, you must complete the course with good marks. These courses are at minimum one year in duration but many are substantially longer. Depending on what you are taking you may also learn the business side of the restaurant business which can make you even more valuable to potential employers. Whether you want to open a restaurant, work at one or find a job at a swanky resort or on a cruise ship, the first step is to obtain your education from an accredited culinary school.
